Main Story vs Living World Layer

Part of NPCs World Verbs Rewards and Living World

Captain's Words has two content layers.

Main story layer

Finite, handcrafted, emotionally important.

Example arc:

Bottle arrives
  ↓
First island
  ↓
Merchant lends boat
  ↓
Old Lighthouse
  ↓
Lighthouse restored
  ↓
Map reveals Whale Bay
  ↓
Whale Bay rescue
  ↓
Grandpa clue

Controls:

  • destination unlocks
  • major NPC introductions
  • boat progression
  • map reveals
  • first-time emotional moments
  • chapter transitions

This layer should feel authored.

Living world layer

Reusable, repeatable, long-term.

After the child has met an NPC, that NPC can continue offering new problems:

  • Merchant receives a new shipment
  • Fisherman finds damaged nets
  • Lighthouse keeper finds an old map note
  • Harbour master needs missing place names restored
  • Carpenter needs help labelling wood supplies

Controls:

  • daily/weekly NPC jobs
  • repeated practice sessions
  • optional collectibles
  • house decorations
  • relationship growth
  • world maintenance problems

Player feeling

The story moves forward, but the world keeps living.
